A massive backlog of bench warrants, dating back to 37 years ago, will be addressed by National Court this year.

Today acting National Court judge, Justice Laura Wawun-Kuvi in Waigani, says she will deal with 55 of these outstanding bench warrants.

Whilst sitting in the criminal track in the National Court in Waigani, Justice Wawun-Kuvi told lawyers from both the Public Solicitors and Public Prosecutor’s office who were in court that the list of these warrants is now before the Officers in Charge of both these legal offices.

She says she has given the State a month to review these cases, and inform the court before the end of the month if they can still be prosecuted.

This is because some of those named on the warrants, or their arresting officers may be deceased.
