Man in police custody over father’s death

A 29 year old man is now in police custody following the death of his own father last night.

Police report states the suspect, from Rigo in Central Province was apprehended at Taikone in the Moresby South electorate where the family resides.

The man’s father, now deceased, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Moresby General Hospital after he was attacked by the son following an argument.

Police detectives are interviewing the suspect and family members at this time before his charge will be laid.

The violent act of killing is the most recent following numerous attacks and killings around the nation’s capital in recent times.

Meantime, greater coordination from all stakeholders is needed to address the prevailing violence that is occurring in the city in recent times.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Gideon Ikumu made these remarks on the FM100 Nasfund Talkback Show this morning as police try their best to address the escalating trend of violence.

Met Supt Ikumu said the situation needs the input from the government, city authorities, business houses and the general public together to reduce this trend.

He said poverty is one contributing factor as well as the decay in moral principles in the society.

Ikumu adds the city authorities and his office at working together at this time to see out a workable way to address this issue.

Meanwhile he said police investigations into the reported cases are ongoing and the public will be briefed on the progress.
