A seventeen-year old is among three suspects arrested for alleged involvement in sea piracy and other crimes in Nauna village, in the Rapatona LLG, of Manus province.

The suspects were arrested by water police personnel over the weekend after hijacking two boat with passengers who were travelling back to Kavieng after a burial in Manus.

According to Provincial Police Commander Chief inspector David Yapu, the youths got away in the boats to Nauna Island, leaving the people stranded on a small island.

Yapu said his officers attended to the incident with the Paramount Chief and rescued the people and set them free to travel back to Kavieng.

The suspects are currently in Police custody at the Lorangau Police Station, awaiting CID officers to deal with them.

He appealed to people to respect the rights of people travelling on boat out at sea and not to cause any harm, threats or intimidation on them as it is a serious Criminal offence under the law.
