THE SOMARE FAMILY has advised that Paul Bengo is now representing the family during this time, as the family prepares the funeral arrangements for the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.

Mr Bengo is the former Chief of Staff for the late Founding Father of the Nation, and has been loyal to Sir Michael after being handpicked by Sir Michael in 1973 from UPNG as his Principal.

Daughter Bertha Somare made this known in a media release today at 2pm.

At the same time, an emotional Prime Minister James Marape was announcing Cabinet’s approval for a National Mourning period in March as a sign of respect for PNG’s longest serving Prime Minister.

Accompanying the PM, were several members of his Cabinet, as he also announced that dates for a National Public Holiday to observe the passing away of Sir Michael.

Meantime, the Somare family advises that Mr Bengo will represent them in liaising with State officials to ensure arrangements for Sir Michael have the consent of the family and is acceptable to the people of Papua New Guinea.
