The drive-thru sampling facility at the Taurama Aquatic Centre is now open to the general public for Covid-19 testing.

Chief Executive Officer for St. John Ambulance Matt Cannon says the testing facility is a partnership with the NCD Provincial Health Authority and the PNG Defence Force where people can get tested if presented with cold and flu symptoms.

It was an initiative that was pushed from the controller’s office to have this facility set up purposely to provide residents access to nearby testing, with the aim to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

NCD has seen a spike in Covid-19 cases with community transmission being evident.

He says they are concerned most people work in jobs that are considered essential, and it was important to have them tested on a daily basis.

City residents with fever, cough, sore throat or runny nose are encouraged to go in for testing.

Meanwhile, discussions are still underway for the centre to be made into an Isolation Centre that will only cater for residents with mild symptoms, while severe cases will be referred to the Rita Flynn isolation centre.
