The Waigani Police Station in Port Moresby, National Capital District (NCD), will be the first to be re-opened under the Station of Excellence program.

The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) Station of Excellence program in partnership with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) is one of the Marape-Steven Government’s key initiatives to help strengthen law and order in the country.

Police Minister Bryan Kramer said, The program involves identifying a police station in PNG, reforming and equipping it, recruiting good people and posting them to that station, making sure they have vehicles, GPS technology, best training and supervision, and see how that station operates.

He said refurbishment work on the Waigani Police Station is almost complete, after which work will begin on stations in the Enga, Milne Bay, West New Britain and Madang provinces.

“The Government’s aim is to set up these Stations of Excellence in four regional provinces, especially those where there has been an escalation in crime over recent years,” Kramer said.

He said that during his recent visits to Alotau in Milne Bay and Kimbe in West New Britain, he discussed this initiative with the political leaders, businesses and communities.

“The wider community has to be engaged in a meaningful partnership to address the increasing law and order issues throughout the country,” Kramer said.
