PNG PREPARES TO RECEIVE LATE SIR MEKERE MORAUTA

The body of the Late Sir Mekere Morauta is set arrive in Port Moresby on Thursday December 31st.

Leading preparations for a state funeral is Housing Minister and member for Moresby South Justin Tkatchenko.

In a briefing today he told reporters that the official funeral program of former Prime Minister and Moresby North West MP late Sir Mekere Morauta will begin tomorrow until his burial on January 8 next year.

Mr Tkatchenko announced that Sir Mekere’s body will arrive at the Jackson’s VIP terminal at 1:30pm tomorrow with wife Lady Roselyn Morauta and son James Morauta.

Late Sir Mekere’s casket will be received with a ceremonial guard of honor by the PNGDF personnel.

Prime Minister James Marape, NCD Governor Powes Parkop, Foreign Affairs Minister along with MPs and selected family members will be at the airport to receive his casket.

Public viewing will be held next Monday at the Grand Hall at Parliament House from 10am to 4pm where members of the public will view and pay respect to Sir Mekere.

A State Funeral will be held on January 8 2021 at the Sioni Kami Memorial Church before his burial at Independence Hill.

Prime Minister James Marape described late Sir Mekere as an outstanding statesman whose legacy would remain for decades to come.

He said Sir Mekere had set high standards for the country that would be hard to emulate.

The former Prime Minister and current Moresby North West MP, Sir Mekere died at the age of 74, on the 19th of December in Brisbane after a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Lady Roslyn Morauta and son James.

Sir Mekere was born in 1946 in Kukipi Village, East Gulf, to Morauta Hasu and Morikoai Elavo.
