Hela To Receive 500 Police Personnel

A monumental step forward to addressing the law and order issues of Hela province was marked on Thursday with the announcement of 500 positions for police officers to be created for the province.

In a press conference at the Department of Personnel Management at Central Government Office, Secretary, Taies Sansan, made the announcement after approval was given by the Salary & Conditions Monitoring Committee of the Department.  

She said the approval of the Police structure for Hela was initially given on December, 2017, and yesterday the Committee reaffirmed the approval for the creation of 535 police positions under the Hela Provincial Administration.

Sansan added that it was now in the Hands of the Commissioner of Police, David Manning, to implement the new structure accordingly with administration and assistance of her department.

Accompanying her were Hela Governor, Philip Undialu and Provincial Administrator, William Bando, and other leaders of the provincial administration.

Mr Bando said this was a long time coming and would save the Provincial Government spending K1.2m-K1.3m every month on security engagement, allowances and accommodation.

Governor Undialu, welcomed the announcement saying currently there were 99 officers serving six hundred thousand people in his province, and this boost would see much needed improvement in law and order.

The Governor called on Exxon Mobil, Oil Search, Santos and other development partners to start this new journey with him saying currently in these partners where spending between K3m-K5m a month on outside security to protect their assets.

He said the new structure would see the first establishment of 20 police houses in Komo and then onto Magarima, Koroba-Kopiago and Tari.

Undialu envisioned that by 2023 he wanted to see the down scaling of the engagement of outside security in the province.

Meanwhile, Secretary Sansan stated that after the approval, DPM payroll staff would proceed to upload the new structure onto the payroll system and the formal engagement of the personnel would proceed with advertisements and recruitment to be done both internally and externally.
