Heavy rain and flood warning

Renewal heavy rain and flood warning advice 03 has been issued by the Port Moresby Warning Centre this morning for Southern region and parts of Papua New Guinea islands.

According to the PNG National Weather Service Duty Forecaster Peter Warupi, active trough lies south of the country with satellite models showing increasing cloudy conditions with heavy rains and thunderstorm activity over the Western, Hela and Southern Highlands provinces.

Warupi says, recent continuing heavy rain, showers and thunderstorms has increased soil moisture content and with more rainfall expected to continue for the next 12/24 hours resulting in flash flood occur in low lying areas.

He says the mountains and valleys, steep slopes and along rivers and streams of Western, Hela and parts of highlands will be experiencing heavy rain causing flash flooding and landslides.

All communities in the warning areas must take precaution and move to higher grounds immediately and not to drive through or cross rivers and streams.

Mr. Warupi says, all affected communities must stay tune for further weather updates and warning and must report hazardous weather condition and events to relevant authorities.
